CEDAR CITY, Utah (June 27, 2026) - Intense defensive battles, hostile crowds, and physical paint play defined a spectacular weekend of hoops at the Larry H. Miller Utah Summer Games, as CMS-A and Tap Elite outlasted the competition to capture gold in the 8th Grade Youth Basketball Championships.
Playing across two separate gymnasiums in southern Utah, both divisions delivered high-stakes drama that ultimately rewarded the teams who could best handle the pressure.
Girls 8th Grade: CMS-A Avenges Lone Loss to Capture Gold
The Girls 8th Grade Championship at Cedar High School set up a classic David versus Goliath narrative with a twist. Top-seeded CMS-A squared off against the bottom-seeded Lehi Funk, but it was Lehi Funk who held the psychological edge after squeaking out a narrow 30-28 victory during pool play earlier in the tournament.
CMS-A made sure history would not repeat itself.
From the opening tip, CMS-A's ferocious defensive hands completely disrupted the Lehi Funk offense, generating a flurry of early steals and blocks. Refusing to let Lehi Funk find any rhythm from beyond the arc, CMS-A jumped out to a stunning 10-0 run, forcing an immediate timeout.
"Our defensive effort is where it happened," CMS-A coach Travis Iverson said. "We talked about it before the game. We knew we didn't have our best defense yesterday against the same team. And right from the tip... we made them call the first timeout. We did that. And from there, we settled in and played our type of ball, which is defensive pressure all the time."
Lehi Funk adjusted, driving aggressively into the paint to draw fouls and finally getting a 3-pointer to fall to cut the deficit. However, CMS-A dominated the glass, turning defensive rebounds into fast-break points to carry an 18-9 lead into halftime.
The second half proved to be a chippy, physical affair. CMS-A implemented a suffocating zone defense that locked down the interior while utilizing their size advantage on the offensive end.
"Going big inside... that was the gameplan we started," Iverson said. "They only have one big on their team, you've got to use what's to your advantage, which we have two very good bigs that have worked their butts off with their footwork inside... those girls, they don't miss a lot of shots when they're two feet away from the basket."
Lehi Funk mounted a late, fast-paced push, but CMS-A answered with a definitive mid-range dagger to push the lead to 40-21, sealing the 8th Grade Girls Championship.
"It comes down to hard work," coach Billy Welch added. "These girls put in the work no matter what... And I think that their hard work, with a little determination and a lot of heart, put them where they are today."
Boys 8th Grade: Tap Elite Silences Ruckus Crowd in Championship Thriller
Over at Canyon View High School, the Boys 8th Grade Championship brought together the two highest-ranked titans of the bracket. Both top-seeded SUSA Blue and the No. 2 seed Tap Elite entered the contest completely undefeated, having blown out every opponent in their path.
SUSA Blue possessed the home-court advantage, backed by an extremely vocal, raucous crowd that roared as SUSA grabbed a quick 4-0 lead by pounding the paint for layups.
Tap Elite, focusing on staying calm, cool, and collected, weathered the early storm. Executing a beautiful backdoor cut out of a timeout, Tap Elite got on the scoreboard and quickly unlocked a premier perimeter game, sinking three consecutive 3-pointers to take a tight 23-20 lead into halftime.
The second half morphed into a tactical war of attrition. SUSA Blue implemented a full-court press to speed up the tempo, reclaiming a brief 35-32 lead. The game became intensely physical as officials called fouls on nearly every possession, placing Tap Elite under immense adversity amid a tense atmosphere.
With the game knotted at 39 with just three minutes remaining, you could cut the tension with a knife.
Tap Elite seized control of the pace, using their execution out of timeouts to slice through the defense. Running a massive fast-break play in the final minute, Tap Elite extended their lead and silenced the crowd, securing a 48-39 victory to capture the title.
"Staying together," Tap Elite coach Sterling Tapper said of the win. "Playing hard, playing our way, playing with our principles... We're from Lehi, Utah. So we already knew we'd be the underdog coming down here. Especially with SUSA being one of the only club teams down here... just really staying true to ourself and playing as hard as we could."
Reflecting on his team's composure through the critical officiating and hostile environment, Tapper credited his own past experiences.
"I played college basketball," Tapper noted. "I was trying to get them to understand that you're always going to be under adversity. I was trying to keep them cool, letting them know to let us deal with the refs, you guys play... SUSA's from here, and there was a big crowd. I love it for my kids. I love that they got put in this situation."
