‘Cafe Sabor Thunderbird Drill Invitational’ brings 30 teams to SUU to compete

CEDAR CITY, Utah (December 13, 2025) - The Larry H. Miller Utah Summer Games hosted their second rendition of the 'Cafe Sabor Thunderbird Drill Invitational,' drawing 30 teams from five different classifications to the campus of Southern Utah University to compete.

5A and 6A kicked the day off to a great start in the morning pod, with Hillcrest and Bingham taking home overall honors. 2A, 3A, and 4A hammered it home, with Duchesne, Canyon View, and Crimson Cliffs taking first overall in their respective classifications.

In addition to fantastic team performances throughout the day, the high point winners from individual competition on Dec. 12 showcased their performances for Saturday's audience.

The most meaningful competition of the day, though, was not held on the floor. In a contest to donate food to students suffering from food insecurity, the drill teams raised over 1,000 pounds of food for SUU's HOPE Pantry.

LHM USG Executive Director Jon Oglesby said, "We want to express our gratitude to all those who donated, as well as Pam Branin and her staff at the Community Engagement Center for making this all possible."

Bingham locks up 6A title

With first-place finishes in both military and dance, the Bingham Minerettes narrowly beat out the Corner Canyon Charelles for first in the 6A overall competition.

"These kids work so hard. They fight for every single thing that they're doing on that floor," Bingham Head Coach Selina Pengelly shared. "I couldn't be more proud of them."

However, Corner Canyon didn't go home empty-handed, as their show routine earned them a first-place finish of their own.

Presley Brooks took the individual high point for 6A with an impressive lyrical performance.

Well-rounded morning pushes Hillcrest to 5A honors

Hillcrest secured the overall title in 5A with strong performances across the board, taking first in dance and second in both military and show.

"Our team has so much passion and so much love for each other," Hillcrest Head Coach Chelsea Divine explained. "Our theme this year is 'stand as one,' so our whole message and intention is to stand united through the good and the bad. They really have put their whole hearts into it."

As far as the other 5A categories, the Salem Hills Lashays landed first in military, and the Olympus Athenians snatched the top spot in show.

Libby Scherschligt's lyrical performance earned her the individual high point title for 5A.

Crimson Cliffs comes out on top in evenly-matched 4A field

Finishing first in show, second in military, and third in dance, Crimson Cliffs finished first overall for 4A.

"These beautiful girls deserve this more than anything," said Crimson Cliffs Head Coach Natalie Francis. "They've worked so hard, and they're an amazing drill family. We love them."

The Snow Canyon Eshelles' military routine brought home first in the category, and the Desert Hills Tempest Line took first in dance.

With a strong lyrical performance on Friday, Sofia Galindo Ramirez took 3A high point honors.

Canyon View completes 3A sweep

After sweeping all three categories in 3A, the Canyon View Talons solidified a clear overall win.

"We've had a lot of injuries, so it's fun that our girls were able to go out there and do awesome today," Canyon View Coach Alex Staheli shared. "It's a great start to our season, and we're just really excited for our year."

The local team also donated an incredible 364.5 pounds of food, totalling the most contributed food across all classifications.

Canyon View Coach Nicole Mikkelson added, "We were really grateful to win the HOPE Award because all of the things that we got to donate will go to helping our community."

Reagyn Reynolds earned the high point in 3A thanks to her lyrical performance.

Duchesne takes over in 2A

Like their Talon counterparts in 3A, the Duchesne Talons also swept all three categories in their classification, lining up a 2A title win.

"This is a really good confidence-booster for our team," said Duchesne Head Coach Kellee Grant. "We've had some unforeseen incidents happen the last couple weeks, and we've had to recover from them and step up. We didn't know if we were quite as prepared as we wanted to be coming into this, but I think this really helps boost their confidence and reward all the hard work they've been putting in."

A great lyrical performance from Taylor Crum garnered the individual high point title in 2A.
