CEDAR CITY, Utah (March 22, 2025) - The Larry H. Miller Utah Summer Games hosted approximately 750 wrestlers at Canyon View High School for their annual wrestling event on March 22.
36 of these athletes brought home the 'Triple Crown' honor, meaning they earned gold medals in each of the three styles: Greco, Freestyle, and Folkstyle.
Wrestling sport coordinator Dallas Lowry stated, "It's the ultimate thing in a tournament. To have a 'Triple Crown' means you have put time and energy into being good in three different sports. It's like saying I could run a sprint, high jump, and long jump and take first in all of them."
In the 167-177 16U/Junior bracket, Rickelle Collins won the award after pinning in six matches across the three styles. She shared that her main goal in traveling from Carbon, Utah to Cedar City for her matchup was to take home the 'Triple Crown' trophy.
While the dominance of athletes like Collins is impressive, for some wrestlers, simply participating is a feat in its own right.
73-year-old participant and coach Craig Miner may have taken bronze in the 148-157 Open Division, but he made a valiant effort to challenge competitors much younger than him.
"It's truly been an amazing experience to still be able to Wrestle at 73. To have been able to compete at the Summer Games the last two years against 15 to 25-year-olds has truly been a highlight of my life," Miner shared. "I must say I pushed myself to do it as I wasn't sure how an old man would be received by these young men but they have been nothing but respectful. I expect to be back at 74."
