CEDAR CITY, Utah (June 5, 2024) - At the Larry H. Miller Utah Summer Games Physically Challenged Bowling event at Cedar Bowling Center on June 5, over thirty bowlers took on the challenge of downing pins in singles and doubles competition.
Each year, the bowling event gives individuals with physical and intellectual disabilities an opportunity to take part in USG and compete in an event of their own.
"It gives them something to look forward to every year," shared sport coordinator and Cedar Bowling Center owner Kathy Jones. "This group is amazing."
After bowling concluded for both doubles and singles, all participants received gold medals for their efforts.
One of these bowlers, BJ Evans, saved his best for last, bowling two strikes in the tenth frame to close out an outstanding 174 score between his two games.
Another participant, Steven Montgomery shared that he had a great experience bowling, especially because he got to do it next to his brother, Alex Montgomery. Alex bowled 174 in a thrilling side-by-side with Curtis Harper, who bested him by one pin.
In addition to bowling, individuals with physical and intellectual disabilities will see growing opportunities to compete in Cedar City in coming years. From 2025-2027, Special Olympics Utah will work with Southern Utah University through the Larry H. Miller Utah Summer Games to host the 'Special Olympics Utah Summer Games' on campus.
